    HOW IT WORKS

    Calculation method

Accrue monthly interest at nominal annual rate/12 on each existing debt, pay its entered fixed payment and roll freed budget to the highest-rate balance. Compare a consolidation loan using that same total budget, subject to its contractual minimum. Track total interest and fees, payoff months and the first cumulative borrowing-cost crossover.

    KEEP IN MIND

    Assumptions & limits

    • No new borrowing, promotional-rate expiry, daily accrual, missed payments, prepayment restrictions or variable rates. The existing strategy reallocates freed payments, rather than reducing the household budget.
    • Upfront fees are extra cash outside the common monthly budget; financed fees accrue interest. A cheaper payment is not proof of savings. This model does not assess credit approval, secured-loan risk or legal debt-relief options.

    • Basis: User-entered balances, contractual rates, payments and fees.

    CONSOLIDATION WORKED EXAMPLE

    Compare the same monthly budget.

This fictional scenario uses the calculator's example assumptions: $8,000 at 20% with a $250 fixed payment, $4,000 at 15% with a $150 payment, a third debt at zero, and a proposed 9% five-year consolidation loan with $300 of fees paid upfront.

    How to interpret it

The model keeps the existing debt strategy and consolidation option on the same monthly budget, reallocating freed payments and including fees in borrowing cost. A lower required payment is not necessarily lower total cost; check the calculated cost comparison and debt-free timing together.

    Limits of this example

    • Monthly nominal-rate/12 accrual is used; daily interest, promotional expiry, new borrowing, variable rates, missed payments, and prepayment restrictions are excluded.
    • This is not an assessment of credit approval, collateral risk, or legal debt-relief options. Fees paid upfront are outside the monthly budget.
