HOW IT WORKS
Calculation method
Compound the assumed gross annual return at its monthly effective rate. Add the entered deposit monthly or at each year-end, then deduct each scenario's percentage fee at year-end. Compare identical portfolios with different annual fees, tracking cumulative fees and the resulting lost growth.
KEEP IN MIND
Assumptions & limits
Returns and percentage fees stay constant. Deposits occur at month-end or year-end as selected, before the annual fee deduction. Taxes, trading costs and sales loads are excluded.
The alternative uses identical contributions and gross returns with only its annual fee changed. Do not subtract MER again from a return already reported net of fees. Year-end fee deductions approximate, but do not replicate, daily fund expense accrual.

RATE CONVENTION
Compare like with like
A nominal annual rate is not the same as an effective annual return. With nominal rate r compounded m times per year, the equivalent effective annual rate is (1 + r / m)m − 1. For example, 6% nominal compounded monthly is about 6.17% effective for a year before fees, taxes, or inflation.
Contribution and withdrawal timing also matters: end-of-month deposits miss that month’s growth, while a beginning-of-period deposit earns for the full period. Compare tools only after matching the rate convention, compounding period, contribution timing, and fees; a displayed equivalent does not make distinct models identical.
